Bollywood has its fair share of classics, too; in fact, one of the most famous movies was in cinemas for 23 years - which is no easy feat!

Article 15
Article 15 is one of the most popular movies and often comes as 'the one movie everyone in India should see.' But extend that to everyone. If you are interested in the sociological aspect of a country, then Article 15 is an incredible look at the caste system that is in India. It is a crime drama, so there are more than a few tense moments.
If you are a sucker for a true story, then you'll appreciate that Article 15 is based on a true story. We follow a police officer who doesn't want to investigate the harrowing disappearance of young women who are in the lower caste system.
The Sky Is Pink
Bollywood sweetheart Priyanka Chopra Jonas stars in this lovely 2019 hit. If you like some heartache and a big helping of emotion in your movies, then this is one for you. We follow a girl who has recently passed away due to a terminal illness through narration.
Through her eyes, we experience her parents' struggle as they try to manage her daughter's illness, and it looks at their relationship too.
This is a big tear-jerker, but it makes it sadder that it is based on a true story. If you love My Sister's Keeper, then you'll love this too.
Bombay
Perhaps you prefer movies with a historical helping, in which case Bombay offers just that. Released in 1995, Bombay covers what might be one of India's most difficult times.
In 1992 there were Bombay riots, and in this movie, we follow a Muslim bride and a Hindu man struggling as the city is being overwhelmed with religious riots and violence.
An interesting movie with plenty of difficult moments and very insightful about what the people of India went through during this time.
Pad Man
Have you ever heard the name Arunachalam Muruganantham? Well, if you have, then great news! And if not, you're about to be introduced to the Padman. While talking about periods is considered a taboo act in many places, Arunachalam Muruganantham changed the game.
Quite literally, creating affordable sanitary pads and being nicknamed Padman. Suppose you have seen the documentary Period. End of Sentence, which was Oscar-winning, then you should check out Pad Man asap.
Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga
If you prefer to have a movie that goes against the grain of what might be acceptable in some cultures, then Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga is the LGBTQIA+ movie for you. We follow a beautiful young woman as she goes through the trials and tribulations of trying to be herself and find love - with a woman.
With a conservative and very traditional family, Sweety Chaudhary will make you fall in love with falling in love. A sweet and easy-to-watch movie.
Love Per Square Foot
Bollywood and romance just seem to make sense! Love Per Square foot is the story of two young professionals who are struggling to get a place of their own (separately). In order to finally get keys to the place, they decide to get fake married.
Interestingly, this movie shows the difficulties of the housing market in Mumbai and how challenging it is to get an apartment without a spouse.
And the film that has a monumental 23 year run in movie theatres is Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge - an ultra-cute 90s rom-com.
