Bakewell Food Fair Not A Complete Wash Out

Hey Cats,

In case it doesn't show me and the Mr are big foodies. We love to eat and try new things so when we heard there was a food fair locally we just had to check it out. The great thing about food fairs is lots of great food and drink comes together for you to sample. It is a fantastic way to try new products, support independent traders and also find locally sourced food and drink.

We were super gutted when we saw the weather in the morning but still headed out anyway. Sadly about half the stalls had decided not to show or packed up really early as we were there by 10.30am am so not too late in the day but not to be put off there were still plenty of places to check out and take some goodies home. Plus Bakewell has lots of great little shops to visit including two cheese shops.

We kicked off how we always mean to go on by getting a drink in a really cute little gin wagon. It was almost like an old wooden caravan but really kitsch and made into a bar. I am a total sucker for converted trucks like this and love how intimate and creative the are. Despite the rain the lady was really lovely and we had some lovely gin. There was even a cosy little bench inside with blankets so you can enjoy your drinks. There were lots of great gins to choose from including classics such as violet gin which I love.

One of the main things we were hoping to see was a local butcher to pick up some meat and we weren't disappointed we managed to pick up some crocodile burgers, gin duck and ginger sausages and some thai chicken wings for £10 which is a bargain. A great way to stock up for a barbecue with something a little different. Really friendly service and great quality products.

I did notice a cupcake stand but we were on the hunt for savory so we could go home ans have a little indoor picnic. There were also lots of great places to get hot food ranging from Caribbean soul food to Yorkshire pudding wraps which are basically a roast dinner in a wrap. Another thing we didn't check out was the beer bus.

I had never heard of a hunters pie until I moved to Derbyshire but there was a great stand that has an array of beautiful toppings such as wild mushroom and an array of cheeses so we couldn't resist picking up a couple of them along with a black pudding sausage roll and black pudding scotch egg.

I had been looking forward to checking out Pudgins but sadly they were one of the stalls that didn't show so we popped into the cheese and wine shop instead. If you have never been to Bakewell the cheese and wine shop is worth checking out they have a great selection of cheeses, gifts, beers, wines and spirits. They also have some great flavoured coffees and gifts you can create into a personal hamper for your loved ones. We picked up some cherry Bakewell gin and a vanilla stout.

Despite the weather we had a great time and picked up some real treats. What do you like to look out for at food fares?
