5 Things To Do In Whitby This Summer On A Budget

I had never been to visit the lovely Whitby before but had heard it was really cute. If you have never been either let me just tell you a little about it. Whitby is a small seaside town on the Yorkshire coast in the UK. It is famous for Bram Stoker Dracula and also Captain cook. There is also a hugely successful goth weekend that descends upon the town due to its Dracula roots. There is lots to do for the whole family.

I decided to try a coach trip to see what it was like. I went with my Mom and we honestly had the best day out together. Whitby is really cute and easy to get around. It is really accessible for all. We travelled with Andrews coaches who were really accommodating. The trip cost £30 each and for that we got picked up and dropped off back a stone throw from our homes. Yes the journey takes a few hours but there is a stop half way at a services so you can freshen up and grab refreshments if needed. Then after a day of seeing the sites rest knowing you will be taken to your doorstep. Taking a lot of the pressure off travel was really nice and meant we could just enjoy the day.

1. Walk Along The Beach Or Pier

The main reason to visit a seaside is to see the sea and you wont be disappointed by Whitby's sandy beach. The tide came in really fast so be sure to get your walk in while you can. The water is lovely and you can take a long walk along the beach like we did. There is a big stretch of beach but also a small beach you can also visit. It was fairly quiet when we went and really peaceful to just enjoy the waves and feel the sand between your toes. If the tide is in there is a pier you can walk along and enjoy the views. Here you can see the lighthouses and take in a lovely view of the Whitby Abbey from a distance. There are telescopes for just 50p if you want to take a closer look or see what you can spy out at sea. There is lots of seating so you can enjoy the atmosphere and take a break because there is lots of walking so wear comfortable shoes.

2. Grab Some Fish And Chips Or Ice Cream

It is like the law when you go to the seaside you have to have fish and chips. There are lots of places to choose from and some are a lot busier than others. I had heard people rave about Magpies as they are meant to be similar to Harry Ramsdens in the way they cook their fish and chips. We however opted for Mr Chippy which was just a little closer to the seafront. The portions are really generous so you can easily share the large. Everything is cooked fresh and tastes delicious too just watch out for the seagulls who were fairly well behaved as long as you cover your food. We ate ours on the harbour and had no trouble it was also a lovely view of Whitby and gave us a chance to relax for a bit. There are also lots of places you can grab a sweet treat Rock is from 60p in a lot of shops or ice creams are available all over.

3. Go On A Boat Trip Or Enjoy The Harbour

There is a lovely Harbour to enjoy with lots of things to do. There is plenty of seating to just sit and enjoy watching the boats come and go while you relax. There is also a spot where you can have a go at crabbing which is great for kids. There is a lovely pirate boat that you can go out to sea on and it is super affordable at only £5 a trip per person. We didn't go on the trip but lots of people did and it was lovely to watch them go out to sea and come back. There are a few alternative boats that also do this and even some day fishing trips too.

4. Visit The Whalebones

Whitby is also famous for having a pair of whalebones that you can visit. Of course we went to see these and it is a reminder of the sheer size of these magical creatures but also a past industry that existed within the town. This is a great photo spot and is high up enough to look down on the sea, get views of the Abbey and relax for a picnic. We spotted an ice cream van and enjoyed an ice cream and rest in the sun. The Abbey is up 199 stairs so we didn't do this but there are lots of lovely views of its ruins all around town too.

5. Have A Pint Or A Cuppa On Captain Cooks Replica Boat

Down at the harbour you will see a huge boat which is the replica of Captain Cooks original boat. This has been turned into a great place where you can grab a drink and look out onto the harbour. I think it is really cool to have this in the town along with all the statues of Captain Cook. I believe they also do food too but a cuppa would be just perfect to end a lovely day on. You can sit on the deck and enjoy the views.
