We often preach about how other people should remember they are beautiful, spend time lifting others and working out bums off to obtain our goals and amongst all of this we neglect the most important thing in self care....sleep. How many times have you stayed up late or gone to work on only a few hours sleep? Did you realise that by depriving yourself of sleep you are impacting your own well being? Lets talk about sleep!
Everyone knows that ideally we need about 8 hours sleep a night. There are three main stages of sleep that are all vital for our health in different ways.
Light sleep is the stage in which you can be easily awoke. Your muscles start to relax and it is in this stage of sleep that your body works to improve your muscle memory. Often in this stage of sleep is when you get that sense of falling because your muscles are relaxing and may contract a little.
Deep Sleep leads on from there which is where your body works to improve your immune system and repair any damages. Which is why when your ill all you want to do is sleep because your body wants to work to get you better. In this stage movement stops and brain waves become much lower.
REM is the stage in which your body is working on your brain helping improve your memory and brain activity.
Knowing that your body needs these vital stages of sleep to help repair your body and build memory as well as recharge you for the next day it is no wonder that lack of sleep can really impact your mental health.

I really don't get enough sleep. I am such a bad sleeper, but I would love that to improve.
ReplyDeleteI never get enough sleep and it's something I've been thinking a lot about recently as I know how important it is so this has been amazing help!
ReplyDeleteThis strikes such a chord with me. My sleep patterns are terrible. I'm doing well if I get 6 hours of kip a night. I've just bought a FitBit which comes with a sleep monitor. My stats make for frightening reading! Oops! Tx
ReplyDeleteI struggle with insomnia and also that I sleep for up to 24 hours in one go. I'm being checked at the hospital now for what it can be cause I'm always feeling lethargic. :(

I am a big advocate of getting enough sleep, though my kids don't seem to be! I've used sleep trackers before and have always been surprised at how much broken sleep I have.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your review with us, I had no idea there were tools for tracking your sleep and they would enable you to get better sleep.
ReplyDeleteI definitely don't get enough sleep. 8 hours is always what I aim for but I normally get nearer 6.5-7 which isn't as bad as it used to be for me x
ReplyDeleteI reviewed the S+ as well, it is a great product, and is surprising just how much sleep you get as compared with how much sleep you thought you got x
ReplyDeleteI've been using my fitbug to review my sleeping habits. I don't tend to wake up too often in the night it seems so obviously get good rest!
ReplyDeleteSome nights I have a great night sleep and others it's a mix of tossing and turning, and laying awake for hours. I definitely could do with some consistency! I'd be interested to see my results with this x

I am an insomniac so I get an average of 3-4 hours and it leaves me feeling sick and groggy all day. I would love to try the S+ maybe it might help?
ReplyDeleteI need a lot more sleep, I really do neglect myself.
ReplyDeleteMy sleep schedule has been so off lately. I'll feel off if I wake up too late or too early even if I get eight hours.
ReplyDeleteMost nights I get about 7 hours sleep if I am lucky. Some nights I get less.
ReplyDeleteA great post. I do get enough sleep but it's not the best quality sleep by any means. I have to stop falling asleep on the couch.....
ReplyDeleteSleep is so important to me. I really struggled when my son was a newborn because sleep was out the window. For me sleep helps with so much.
ReplyDeletethis is really interesting. If I don't get enough sleep it leaves me feeling terrible. I have no concentration, i am n=moody, snappy, my body aches and I often feel down. Sleep is so important!
ReplyDeleteI'm an insomniac. I rarely get more than 4/5 hours a night usually much less but it's broken sleep. I very rarely get to deep sleep without waking let alone to rem. You can see why sleep deprivation is used as a form of torture
ReplyDeleteI definitely don't get enough sleep and since getting my fitbit, that has only been brought home to me more. I definitely need to get more
ReplyDeleteI am a terrible sleeper although I would say it has definitely improved since I got a tempur mattress, I do lay awake for hours on end though and function on around 4-6 hours a night when before it was 2-4. I would love to see my results with this though as I never feel like I'm fully asleep and like I'm always concious of my surroundings x

ReplyDeleteI can only go to bed when I'm really tired as I just end up lying there thinking.... For hours. So now I use an audiobook through my ipod so I don't think....it works

ReplyDeleteMy sleep pattern is awful but I think it is due to working shifts. I'm lucky to get 5 hours most nights.
