Today is Cinco de Mayo which is a holiday widely celebrated in America and the US. So to celebrate in our own way lets talk about how awesome Mexico is. It truly is top of my bucket list of places to visit! So grab a margarita or a shot of tequila and lets explore.
1.Food and Drink
In the UK Mexican food has suddenly surged in popularity and become part of our regular meal times, but as with most cultural dishes has been altered. There is a lack of passion in the do it yourself ready meal fajita kits. Meal times in Mexico are something of pride full of rich flavour, beautiful chillies and heart. My mouth drools for real Mexican food. If you haven't sampled your local Mexican restaurant get down there right now.
Just imagine sipping an ice cold margarita by the sea, a cold beer with dinner or a damn fine shot of tequila while out celebrating. If you are heaving at the thought of tequila now I can guarantee you have had a heavy night on some harsh tasting liquor. I will even admit for years I avoided tequila myself for the same reasons. Until one day I sampled the most beautiful honey, vanilla and oaky tasting tequila ever. Patron Anejo is mind blowingly lush. Failing that try the average brand with lime and sugar instead of salt and lemon. If you follow my Instagram you will have noticed me and the Mr had a Mezcel party.
Mezcal is Mexico's traditional drink which is meant to be sipped not shotted. Many actually think that tequila comes with worms but it is actually Mezcal and they are just like little bubbles of drink nothing yuck about them. I dare you to give it a try.
Being a bit of a history geek I need to see the country that has it in loads, The original home of the Aztecs which can be seen in the breath taking architecture and art work. I need to see ruins and buildings from ancient times,
Music and dancing are two things that I love and so does Mexico. Influenced by so many genres Mexico pumps out traditional folk music and so much more, I am talking mariachi gangster music. Which sounds so happy but translated is much more sinister, We will talk about that more some other time. Not to mention that 89% of Mexico is heavily religious so masses of catholic iconography can be found. I am fascinated by catholic art,
Catholic influenced art a plenty aside and historical Aztec pieces too. Mexico was home to my favourite artist ever. If you want to find out more about why Frida Khalo is so amazing then check out my post all about Frida. You Can literally visit her home and see some of her self portraits. That may not be exciting to many but to me it is a dream come true.
From deserts and cities to deep blue seas the hot weather makes for a beautiful environment, Growing beautiful flowers and having so many gorgeous natural beauty spots to visit, Lets face it if you are getting out of Britain may as well go somewhere gloriously hot, Swim in places that you can only dream of like this beauty,
If there is one thing Mexico knows how to do it is celebrate! Combining all the dancing, music, food and drink all rolled into one, There are art festivals, feasts and fiestas but the one that hypnotises me is Dia de Muertos. Day of the dead is spent celebrating those who have passed which is such a beautiful thing to do, Celebrating the life you had with loved ones instead of being sad and upset, Plus how amazing is the make up and art that is just based around that alone. Sugar skulls and painted ladies,
So make me jealous and tell me you have been to Mexico already bur make sure you spill all! What do you think is the best thing about Mexico?
