Hey Cats,
I have been lucky enough to work in the lovely picturesque town of Bakewell for the last three and a half years. It is a great place to visit for a day of strolling by the river and dining out. I wanted to tell you all about The Upstairs Cafe which is one of my favourite places to go to lunch.
Just a stone's throw from the river opposite the Coop you will find a sign for the upstairs cafe. It is up some stairs, hence the name so sadly isn’t accessible for everyone but for those who can manage the stairs it is worth it. The staff are friendly and welcoming but if they are unavailable choose a seat and they will be with you really fast.
The menu offers a great selection of homemade food from toasted sandwiches to soups of the day the features I like is in addition to the menu there is also a ‘customers favourites’ board. This is great if like me you can’t decide sometimes as you know they are well loved dishes.
One of the most ordered dishes is the homity pie which is one of my favourites too. If you haven’t tried homity pie before it’s a vegetarian dish of potato, onion and leek in a pasty crust with melted cheese baked to perfection. At The Upstairs Cafe this comes served with coleslaw and salad as the pie is already super filling. This is a great traditional british dish that has a really cosy homey feeling to it.
On my last visit I decided to ask the gentleman server what would be good. He was really knowledgeable and told me about a great Mediterranean vegetable quiche of the day. I love quiche and this came as a generous slice with new potatoes, coleslaw and salad. I really enjoyed changing up my order a little and the quiche was just as great as the homity pie with fresh ingredients, warming and delicious.
My lovely friend ordered the broccoli and cheese bake which was one of the several dishes available that are gluten free. My friend really appreciated that there were several options available to choose from. The menu offers something for everyone and changes with the seasons … I had a fantastic turkey panini at Christmas time. You can get bulkier meals if you’re really hungry.
It is also a great spot if you just want coffee and cake. There’s a selection of delicious coffees that rival any chain coffee shop. The hot chocolate is a must with all the trimmings of cream and
marshmallows. Practically a desert a cup which is great because the only thing I haven’t tried is the
deserts as I am always too full. However I know there are a selection of cakes, ice cream and
pancakes.
As you can tell, I think this is a great place loved by locals and tourists alike, I have never come away disappointed and urge you to give it a try next time you’re in Bakewell.
What would you order?
