5 Classic Spooky Films You Should Watch This Halloween

Hey Cats,

It is the best time of year when everyone is getting spooky and down to watch those scarier films that I love oh so much. So you are partied out from a weekend of early Halloween fun but the big night is still upon us and you may want a more chilled affair so grab those comfy clothes (all black please) get some spooky snacks together and snuggle down with your best ghoul for a night of Halloween film fests.

Hocus Pocus

Lets start with something light and you can't go wrong with a bit of Disney and an all time classic starting the lady herself Bette Midler. I just never get bored of this film and it always brings a gentle spook to the night without bringing too much of a fright. Suitable for the whole family and it is crazy to think that this cult film wasn't a big hit in the movie theatres. We have all been longing for a sequel and now it seems we may just be getting out wish with Hocus Pocus 2 the original screen writer Mick Garris has heavily implied that a follow up is brewing and when asked if the original cast would be returning he said “I think they are, yeah, I think they are. If they don’t do that I think it would be a big mistake because all three of them are still so incredibly potent and powerful and great performers and who else can recreate those characters?”  Fingers crossed they get to work soon but until then the original is a definite for Halloween night.

Beetlejucie

If you have somehow missed the classic gem that is Beetlejuice then get on it now you will be laughing until your belly busts and envying Lydia's gothic glamour. Family friendly for those older monsters that don't spook too easily. If you love Tim Burton you could even follow this with 'A nightmare before Christmas' or 'Coraline'. Another classic that is said to be bubbling a sequel with the original cast said to be up for it. I always get so nervous when films I love get ready to come back but I am excited to see what they bring next. Watch out for those sandworms they will eat you alive and you will find yourself screaming Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice!

Bodybags

Moving away from family friendly if you don't have great attention span or want to pack the most in for your horror then you can't go wrong with an anthology. Bodybags is fulled with tongue in cheek humour and tales of karma. Made by and staring the legend that is John Carpenter I raved about this film a while back in #Fridayfright where you can find out about some more must see anthologies. You get short snappy horror and the old skool style of being talked through the tale by a gruesome host. Other amazing hoists to check out are the crypt keeper and the ever stunning Elvira.

Carrie

A double whammy of awesome wrote by Stephen King and directed by Kimberley Pierce it is so important that we celebrate women in horror and this is a true classic. A sad tale of a lonely bullied girl entering womanhood if you have seen the original but not the new Rage version then check it out and vice versa as they are both pretty killer in their own ways! Also Both directed by very talented women. I think this one holds a special place in my heart I went to an all girls school and the ridicule girls especially can throw at each other when they should be supporting each other is crazy so keep an open mind and always be nice or you may just end up messing with the wrong person.

Citizen Toxie

If you're not easily offended and love your horror independent, campy and slapstick then you have to get on the Troma train. My Favourite Toxic avenger film has to be 'Citiozen Toxie' when an evil Toxie swaps place with our loveable anti hero. I most definitely love the monster and the heart that goes into Troma films. If you're cool and a true 90s kid you may just remember the Toxic avenger cartoons which can be a family friendly alternative for those little spooky fans.m
